Agricultural Minister Roger Clarke of the ruling People's National Party (PNP) has accused the former Jamaica Labour Party government of selling the country short in its 2010 negotiations to divest a number of sugar plantations to Chinese company Complant International. Specifically, Clarke has announced he has a letter indicating that the previous government knew the country had little to gain from the sale. We believe the minister's announcement is reflective of the fact that the 2012/13 budget negotiation process has become increasingly fraught and politicized, such that the PNP is looking to blame the previous government for Jamaica's poor economic health.
