In response to Guatemalan president, Otto Pérez Molina's proposal for greater regional debate on the subject, Ortega stated that decriminalisation would be 'admitting to defeat', and would facilitate greater drug use amongst the Nicaraguan population. Alongside the Honduran and Salvadoran heads of state, he chose not to attend the March 27th summit of Central American leaders where Pérez Molina was presenting the proposal, suggesting that the Guatemalan president will find little regional support for his idea.
