Peter Bunting, the Minister of National Security of Jamaica, announced that the government is advancing its recommendation to merge the country's two main police bodies, the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF) and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). The merger proposal has been on the table for years, and was recently halted by the cabinet in 2011, hence we are unsure if it will be ratified this time around. In recent years Jamaica has seen rising drug violence as Mexico's drug cartels increasingly expand their activities into the Caribbean. Hence, we believe improved coordination in Jamaica's police forces would be a positive development for its citizen's safety, and would help assuage tourists' security concerns.
