February 2012 | Risk SummaryFollowing President Ollanta Humala's election in 2011 we argued that following an initial honeymoon period, the problems of trying to please his diverse support base would become increasingly apparent, a view which appears to be playing out. In an interview with a Spanish newspaper on January 23 Humala claimed to have neither left- or right-wing ideological leanings, although he did admitted that it is 'sometimes necessary to take decisions that may have surprised some of the people who backed us', a clear suggestion that many of his left-wing supporters are disappointed with his lack of social reforms.
