President Rafael Correa received a boost in late January, when members of a disbanded left-wing guerilla group handed him the sword of martyred reformer Eloy Alfaro on the centenary of Alfaro's murder. The sword was handed to Correa as a sign that the group believes him to be the 'true heir' of Alfaro, something which will play well to the president's left-wing support base, which is still awaiting his decision about whether he will run for re-election in next year's presidential ballot.
