Uruguayan President José Mujica backed Argentina's sovereignty claims over the Falklands Islands with an official statement. Referring to a controversy over a measure that prohibits vessels flying the Falklands flag to dock at Uruguayan ports, Mujica said it was a question of "continental solidarity." The ban, initially sponsored by Uruguay, but later approved by other Mercosur partners, has caused frictions with Spanish shipping associations, given that many of their vessels fly the Falklands
