January 2012 | Ratings UpdateGovernor Luis Fortuño signed four bills into law in late December which were aimed at fighting crime and aiding victims. One law requires those accused of violent crimes, weapons sales and drug trafficking to wear ankle monitoring bracelets to track their whereabouts, while another law makes it harder for criminal suspects to plead not guilty by way of insanity. This set of laws will also create a new judicial office to provide services and compensation to crime witnesses and victims. The government's active stance on fighting crime should help improve the country's security and business environment.
