The resuming of protests on January 2 opposing the US$4.8bn Conga project in Cajamarca by environmental activists indicate that the social conflict with the mining sector has not yet completely been resolved, although recent protests are on a lower scale than in November and December. As a result, the government has agreed to review the environmental impact of the project by international experts and committed more public funds to the town where the project is being built.
