The rise in crime has prompted the Dominican Republic (DomRep)'s Chamber of Deputies to approve sweeping changes to the Penal Procedural Code in order to impose harsher sentences on criminals. The initiative was pushed forward by the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD).
