November 2011 | Risk SummaryHonduras plans to open a US-funded naval base at the end of November, the second in less than two years, as part of an ongoing attempt to combat drug-trafficking. The new base will allow the Honduran navy to better patrol the country's Atlantic coast in an attempt to stop traffickers and stem the high levels of drug-related violence that have engulfed the country. According to the UN, approximately a quarter of all drugs shipped from South America to the US passed through Honduras in 2010, resulting in Honduras registering the highest murder rate in the region.
