The minister of justice and security in El Salvador, Manuel Melgar, has stepped down, amid accusations of his inability to stem widespread cartel-driven violence. However, Melgar is also likely to have felt pressure from the US authorities, since US diplomats had long refused to meet with him following the deaths of four marines during his time as a commander of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front. With El Salvador in severe need of additional funds to combat the cartels, it is unsurprising that local press report allegations that President Mauricio Funes encouraged the resignation to appease the US.
