Amnesty International released a damning report in October reporting on widespread violence and abuse committed by the police in the Dominican Republic. The report claims that the police are responsible for 15% of violent deaths recorded between 2005 and 2010. The human rights organization blames the violence on poor government oversight and corruption. In contrast, the government claims the deaths result from an increase in violent crimes. We believe this bodes ill for a government that has already been marred by political instability due to a number of general strikes in protest to cuts to government subsidies in recent months.
