On 15 September, El Salvador was added to a US list of illicit drug transit hotspots, reflecting the growing influence of Mexico's cartels in the country. Mexico's cartels have become increasingly more active in El Salvador over the past few years, with several of the more prominent, including the Zetas and Sinaloa, having formed alliances with local street gangs in El Salvador, as the country has become a preferred transit point for drug trafficking between South America and the United States. While we are leaving our short-term risk rating unchanged, the growing presence of Mexican cartel activity in El Salvador
