Cartel-related violence continues to escalate, negatively impacting on Mexico's risk and security profile. In the most recent instance, a couple was found hanged in northern Tamaulipas for denouncing the cartels through social networking sites. Many traditional media outlets in Mexico, fearing retaliation, have stopped reporting on cartel-related activity. However, with internet usage doubling in Mexico in the past six years, social media has gone a long way toward filling that gap, acting as an alternative source of information and, to many, a safer way to communicate with their fellow citizens about gang activity. The recent murders, however, have made many question that belief, heightening citizen's risk perception of the cartels.
