President Ollanta Humala's popularity fell from 70% to 41% in the past month according to a July 18 Ipsos-Apoyo poll following the unexplained visit by his brother, Alexis, to Russia and the confusion that ensued. Even though Humala dealt straightforwardly with the issue by declaring that if his brother had misrepresented himself as an official envoy of the new government he would be punished, the scandal emphasized the political uncertainty stemming from the president's turbulent family. Indeed, his father, who has publicly supported the president's brother's visit to Russia, is an anti-Chilean nationalist and another brother of the president is in jail for rebellion.
