Revenue from tourism in Nicaragua grew by 22% in the first quarter of 2011, generating revenues of US$93.6mn as 432,000 tourists entered the country between January and May. Government officials indicated they are promoting new destinations such as mountain resorts and cruises, with 206 cruise ships arriving between 2007 and 2010. Increasing tourist inflows could help bolster Nicaragua's fragile balance of payments dynamics and boost foreign exchange earnings.
