July 2011 | Risk SummarySocialist party Polo Democratic has filed a constitutional reform bill that could prevent Juan Manuel Santos from standing for re-election in 2014. Senator Alexander Lopez Maya is spearheading the reform, which would aim to remove re-election from the constitution created under former president Álvaro Uribe, prior to which Colombian presidents were only allowed one term. We do not believe it is likely the bill will pass, and even in the case it does start to gain traction, we believe that the long-term political trajectory of Colombia would not necessarily be adversely thrown off course.
