Governor of Rio state, Sérgio Cabral, appears to be losing popularity fast as questions over his close links with some of Brazil's wealthiest businessmen and confrontational stance towards striking firemen angers many sections of the electorate. Cabral belongs to the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), key partners in the ruling centre-left coalition, and is an important ally in the government's plans to bring the city up to scratch for the FIFA World Cup and Olympics in 2014 and 2016.
