May 2011 | Risk SummaryThere have been widespread strikes across Honduras by public sector workers, teachers and bus drivers, among others, to protest the rapidly rising cost of living in the Central American country. With over 60% of the population living in poverty, according to the country's labour minister, and food and fuel prices set to remain elevated, we would not be surprised to see further action in the coming months. Moreover, the increasingly violent response by security forces to riots and protest in major cities is in our view exacerbating the threat of a dramatic uptick in unrest. On the back of such events, Honduras' short-term political risk rating has fallen to 46.5, from 49.0 previously.
