The head of government for Mexico's federal district, Marcelo Ebrard, has called on his party, the left-wing Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) to decide on a procedure for the election of a single presidential candidate before the 2012 ballot. Ebrard reiterated that for the left to be successful next year the party needs to show a unified face to stand a chance of winning, although in our view the chances of the left being able to challenge the centrist Partido Revolucionario Institucional as slim at best.
