The official explanation for his departure was personal reasons, although given that he left just weeks after the Wikileaks website published a US diplomatic cable calling him 'a foot soldier', who had been selected on the grounds that more appropriate candidates would not have gained congressional approval, it is more likely that his position had become untenable.
